He was born in Chappaqua, New York, on May 11, 1966, to Ronnie I. (née Posner) and Lawrence David Ackman. His father, David, was the founder of the Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Group in New York. He is descended from a Jewish family.
In 1992, Ackman co-founded the investment company Gotham Partners with fellow Harvard graduate David P. Berkowitz. The firm has made several small investments in public corporations. In 1995, he formed a partnership with the insurance and real estate company Leucadia National to bid for Rockefeller Center, but they were unsuccessful.
He founded Pershing Square Capital Management in 2004 with $54 million from his funds and assistance from his former business partner Leucadia National. In December 2007, his funds held a 10% interest in Target Corporation, estimated at $4.2 billion.
